As part of Sweden’s new adoption of the accessibility law, government agency Post- och telestyrelsen (PTS) has officially launched its first oversight initiative to ensure compliance among eCommerce providers.
The European Accessibility Act (EAA), which came into effect on June 28 this year, requires that certain products and services, including online shopping platforms, be accessible to all users, regardless of their functional abilities. PTS is beginning this process by reviewing websites of major e-commerce businesses operating in Sweden.
“In this first round, we’re focusing on larger companies with a strong online presence. The review applies only to their websites (not their apps) and looks specifically at three key areas: the homepage, a product page, and the site’s search function,” says Lisa Wellenius, legal expert at PTS’s accessibility unit.
Ongoing oversight through 2026
This is the first step in a multi-year effort. PTS plans to continue reviewing eCommerce services into 2025 and 2026, gradually expanding the scope. The next companies to be reviewed have not yet been selected.
